Yoga Class Descriptions

Advanced Yoga

Appropriate for those with a basic understanding of asanas, alignment & breath-work. Using the subtle power of asana and breath to open and strengthen; working into inversions, balancing, and arm balancing poses with their proper preparatory poses and modifications.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha is the active form of yoga. During the average Hatha class students will participate in breath control and yoga poses that help to strengthen and lengthen the muscles. Focus will be placed on body alignment and some relaxation. Basic and all-level classes are available. Hatha yoga is appropriate for all body types and abilities.

Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini yoga is a physical and meditative discipline comprising of a set of simple physical movements and breathing techniques, which create positive communication between the “mind” and “body”. Kundalini Yoga concentrates on psychic centers or chakras in the body in order to generate a spiritual power, which is known as kundalini energy. Although it is quite physical, its main benefit is derived from the inner experience.

Beginners/Gentle Yoga

New to Yoga? Want to try it but aren’t sure where to begin? Beginners/Gentle Yoga is a perfect place to start, exposing yourself to its many benefits in a nurturing, supportive environment. This class will cover asanas (poses), breathing exercises and much more. All are welcome, as this class is beneficial to all levels of Yoga practitioner.

Bellydance

Free your mind, and your hips will follow… Come join us for an exotic blend of fun and fitness. This class centers on the American Tribal Style of Bellydance, incorporating movements and music from the Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe. This style builds confidence, core strength and stamina, and can be done by women of all ages, shapes and sizes. It incorporates grounded, earthy movements where women dance together in a group, creating a sense of empowerment, strength and community.

Prenatal Yoga

Come join the new-moms-to-be group! Prenatal yoga has been suggested by women, doctors and midwives throughout the nation to help reduce swollen feet and hands, relieve low back pain, and learn calming breath control. Meet and share information with other area women having similar experiences. Focus will be placed on strengthening and lengthening areas of the body that are affected by pregnancy. Please receive your health provider’s permission before coming to this class.

Restorative Yoga

Stop and take a breath at the end of your busy week! Our restorative yoga class will give you the opportunity to reground yourself and face the weekend ahead. Class will include deep, slow, prop assisted stretching, focus on breath, and time to learn relaxation methods you can use for the rest of the week. This class is open to all levels including those who have never tried yoga and those currently in a rigorous practice.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa is another form of Hatha yoga. During this class there will be a focus on combining movement with breath, as poses will flow from one to the next — similar to a dance. Vinyasa yoga is appropriate for students looking for more of a cardiovascular workout and who already have some yoga experience.

Zumba

The Zumba® program fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will blow you away. Our goal is simple: We want you to want to work out, to love working out, to get hooked. Zumba® Fanatics achieve long-term benefits while experiencing an absolute blast in one exciting hour of calorie-burning, body-energizing, awe-inspiring movements meant to engage and captivate for life! The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. Add some Latin flavor and international zest into the mix and you’ve got a Zumba® class!


Frequently Asked Questions About Yoga

Do you have to be flexible to do yoga?

No! One of the major reasons people do yoga is to increase flexibility. Of course, some people are more flexible than others, but most beginner yoga classes are geared to people of all levels. Whether or not you can touch your toes doesn’t matter. Anyone can do yoga.

Are there “weird” chanting and breathing exercises in yoga?

Sometimes, depending on your instructor or the type of yoga you are doing. Breathing and chanting are considered important exercises in controlling energy in the body. Most classes at Dragonfly Yoga Studio involve minimal to no chanting and some breathing exercises. Some classes might use a breathing technique called Ujjayi Breathing or Victorious Breath. Ujjayi Breathing uses a steady, equal length of inhalation and exhalation.

Do I need to bring equipment?

If you would like to use your own equipment, you may do so. However, the necessary equipment is available free of charge at the studio for your use during class. You can also purchase your own equipment at the studio.

What do I wear to do yoga?

Loose fitting clothes or gym clothes.

Am I too old, young, heavy, etc. to do yoga?

No! As we mentioned before, yoga is for all body types.

I have special health conditions such as arthritis. Can I still do yoga?

As long as your doctor approves, you can do yoga. Some people find yoga to be a great exercise for arthritis, as it improves blood circulation, flexibility, and joint mobility. Be sure to always inform your instructor before class begins if you have any special conditions or injuries.

Can I get in shape/lose weight doing yoga?

Yes! Many people lose weight doing yoga. Exercise — including yoga — is an essential part of getting in shape.

Can I still go to the gym and do yoga?

Yes! Some people feel a combination of yoga and cardiovascular exercise/weight-training works very well.

How often should I do yoga?

Serious yogis do yoga everyday, but most people find two times a week is a good amount. However, any amount of yoga is a good amount. Yoga can be fit into any lifestyle fairly easily.

Only women do yoga, right?

Yoga is popular among women, but it is a common misconception that it is only appropriate for females. In fact, men and women have both been doing yoga throughout its history.
