Frequently Asked Questions About Yoga

Do you have to be flexible to do yoga?

No! One of the major reasons people do yoga is to increase flexibility. Of course, some people are more flexible than others, but most beginner yoga classes are geared to people of all levels. Whether or not you can touch your toes doesn't matter. Anyone can do yoga.

Are there "weird" chanting and breathing exercises in yoga?

Sometimes, depending on your instructor or the type of yoga you are doing. Breathing and chanting are considered important exercises in controlling energy in the body. Most classes at Dragonfly Yoga Studio involve minimal to no chanting and some breathing exercises. Some classes might use a breathing technique called Ujjayi Breathing or Victorious Breath. Ujjayi Breathing uses a steady, equal length of inhalation and exhalation.

Do I need to bring equipment?

If you would like to use your own equipment, you may do so. However, the necessary equipment is available free of charge at the studio for your use during class. You can also purchase your own equipment at the studio.

What do I wear to do yoga?

Loose fitting clothes or gym clothes.

Am I too old, young, heavy, etc. to do yoga?

No! As we mentioned before, yoga is for all body types.

I have special health conditions such as arthritis. Can I still do yoga?

As long as your doctor approves, you can do yoga. Some people find yoga to be a great exercise for arthritis, as it improves blood circulation, flexibility, and joint mobility. Be sure to always inform your instructor before class begins if you have any special conditions or injuries.

Can I get in shape/lose weight doing yoga?

Yes! Many people lose weight doing yoga. Exercise -- including yoga -- is an essential part of getting in shape.

Can I still go to the gym and do yoga?

Yes! Some people feel a combination of yoga and cardiovascular exercise/weight-training works very well.

How often should I do yoga?

Serious yogis do yoga everyday, but most people find two times a week is a good amount. However, any amount of yoga is a good amount. Yoga can be fit into any lifestyle fairly easily.

Only women do yoga, right?

Yoga is popular among women, but it is a common misconception that it is only appropriate for females. In fact, men and women have both been doing yoga throughout its history.
