Welcome to Immerse: Dragonfly Yoga’s Monthly Satsang, where we blend the mystical world of yoga and the practical side of healing. Get ready to embark on a journey that’s part enlightening, part bewildering, and wholly transformative. So, loosen your chakras, check your ego, and prepare to unleash your inner yogi. It’s time to embrace the metamorphosis of your yoga practice like a dragonfly shedding its old self for something new and fantastic.
Yoga has the ability to change your life. The technique, the community, and the introspection all play a role. There is no better way to experience the benefits of yoga than to immerse yourself in a structured program that, along with attending weekly classes, takes you deeper into all yoga has to offer.
We’re inviting our Unlimited Community Members to join us one Friday evening each month from 6-9 p.m. for a yoga experience grounded in community. The best part of a yoga satsang, or sacred gathering, is the real conversation that happens among community members. Each session begins with an opening ceremony and open discussion based on a brief reading that will be sent to you in advance. From there we will dive into the topics listed below, putting the yoga philosophy into action through felt experience and inspiring self-inquiry – without judgment!
Pulling from their decades of teaching knowledge, Alexis and Joe have culled the best and most interesting content to discuss. You’ll leave knowing more about yoga – and yourself!

JANUARY: Drop It Like A Bad Habit (Exploring Our Suffering and Creating Change)
A synonym for yoga is “awareness.” As we develop our witness consciousness, we can become more deeply aware of the inner workings of our mind. From the drama queens of suffering to the hidden gems of empathy, your mind is extraordinary. Examining how our brain works can help us identify the habits that are useful and drop the ones that are not. In this satsang, we’ll discuss and journal about the kleshas, which are specific negative mental patterns that yogic philosophy calls the roots of our suffering. We’ll also find practices that help change the state of our conscious mind and create habit change.
FEBRUARY: Your Karma Screwed Your Dharma (Meditation On Your Way To Your True Calling)
Ever wondered what your cosmic job description is in this chaotic world? Let’s face it, sometimes our unprocessed karma and ego are like clingy exes at a party. They keep us from enjoying life! How do we discover our dharma and be a yogi in modern society (without being embarrassed by it)? In this satsang, we’ll work through a brainstorming process that helps us identify our dharma. We’ll also dig into all things meditation, including how it can untie our karmic knots and dissolve our ego. You’ll leave with a dharma statement and multiple meditation techniques.
MARCH: The 10 Non-Commandments Of Yoga (Making The Esoteric Actionable)
For better or for worse, the text that has most influenced yoga in the west is Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra. In this 2000 year old text, Patanjali tells us that the mind is the problem and we should retreat into stillness. But how is that actually applicable to the life of a modern householder? In this satsang, we’ll use yoga practice techniques to have a felt experience of the 10 yamas and niyamas (ethical guidelines and moral observations) in the Yoga Sutra. We will also journal and discuss how these concepts resonate for you and how you might bring them into your life off the mat.
APRIL: Psoas Over It (Useful Anatomy and Physiology For Your Asana Practice)
Toss those muscle name flashcards out the window – we’re diving into anatomy in a useful way! No more snooze-worthy terms; it’s time to grasp how our bodies groove in all their glory. Get ready for a creative twist on moving, where we’ll stay zen while kicking chronic pain to the curb. In this satsang, we’ll think creatively about how to move our bodies and stay true to the yogic concept of balancing effort and ease, while identifying the poses that are the most beneficial to keeping us out of chronic pain.
MAY: Dosha Disco (Learn The Dance Of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha)
Doshas – they’re like your personalized dance moves for understanding yourself inside and out. Forget one-size-fits-all yoga practice; it’s time to embrace the dance of individuality. In this satsang, we’re popping and locking with the doshas, uncovering both your natural dosha (prakriti) and how you go imbalanced (vakriti). From there we’ll think about yoga practices and lifestyle changes to balance all three doshas: vata, pitta and kapha. We’ll talk in detail about the elements and energy that make up the doshas, how to think about them in your system, and how to move in rhythm with their daily and yearly cycles.
JUNE: Prana Power (Mastering the Art of Breath)
Pranayama, or yogic breathing, is a powerful part of the yoga practice that many students overlook. It’s like the energy drink for your soul and the mental magic trick you’ve been missing out on. In this satsang, we’re spilling the prana secrets – classic breathing techniques that can change your state of mind. Think Deergha Swasam, Ujjayi, Nadi Shodhana, Kapalabhati, Bhastrika, Bramahri, Shitali… yup, we’re throwing them all in the mix! We’ll also talk about the five types of prana and how they move in your body. Get ready to inhale the vibes and exhale the stress because it’s pranayama time!
JULY: Meditation Vs. Contemplation (Two Quakers Teach You Yoga)
Is meditation the same as contemplation? Spoiler alert: No! But both are critical to spiritual evolution. In this satsang, we’ll weave contemplation into our asana, pranayama and meditation practices in a way rarely seen in yoga classes. Joe and Alexis will talk about their contemplative journey as Quakers, and how this western religious society closely aligns with yogic concepts. We’ll also experience silent worship Quaker style – it’s ok, you don’t have to wear a bonnet. Warning: some God talk – but no dogma!
AUGUST: Dine to Align (Plant-Based Delights for Your Dosha)
Get ready to tantalize your taste buds and balance your energies! This delectable session is all about embracing the nourishing power of a plant-based lifestyle, mindful eating, and aligning with your unique dosha. From identifying foods that harmonize with your energy blueprint to discovering how confused most of us are when it comes to eating, we’re serving up an informative feast for your body, mind, and spirit. In this satsang, we dive into the vibrant world of Ayurvedic dining, Alexis and Joe’s work with Peaceful Weight Loss Through Yoga, and the art of eating in harmony with your inner essence – and the rest of the planet.
SEPTEMBER: ChakraPalooza (The Chakras As A Model For Personal Evolution)
Chakras aren’t just colors and shapes; they’re your personal Google Maps for spiritual growth, emotion spotting, and energy shifting. We can use the chakras to access energy inside and outside, locate where we are in our evolution, and examine emotions like joy and sorrow before it impacts our physical bodies. In this satsang, we’ll discuss the western psychology associated with the chakras and journal about our own evolution. We’ll talk about how chakra imbalances reflect many illnesses. And we’ll put these energy sources to work through pranayama and meditation.
OCTOBER: Bowing To The Darkness and The Light (Yoga's Hidden Realities Unveiled)
Instagram yoga might paint a picture of gravity-defying poses, trendy smoothies, and athleisure galore, but let’s get real – that’s just scratching the surface. Modern western yoga has its downfalls, from those demoralizing injuries to cliches to cultural appropriation. But here’s the twist: yoga is also your ticket to exploring the depths of your own shadows and evolving from that awareness. In this satsang, we’re getting into those common yoga practice missteps, calling out where the yoga culture can trip over its own mat, and shining a light on the hidden corners of our own dark sides. Yoga, it turns out, is a whole lot more than just pretty pictures – it’s the mirror to your soul’s journey!
NOVEMBER: Kosha Kreations (Models For Building A True Home Practice)
Newsflash – you’re not your body, your breath, or your thoughts. You’re a multi-layered cosmic masterpiece! It’s time to strip away those kosha layers that have been hiding your authentic self and uncover the hidden imbalances within. Once we’ve got those layers sorted, you’ll be crafting yoga practices that are like a tailor-made suit for your soul. In this satsang, we’re going deep into the koshas, uncovering their secrets and even exposing those chronic issues they try to hide. Each of us will be the architect of a 20 to 30-minute home practice that hits every kosha. Get ready to unveil the real you, layer by layer!
DECEMBER: Surrender To The Infinite (True Freedom Arrives When You Let Go)
In many ways, all yoga roads lead to surrender. Surrender is the culmination of the practice of non-attachment. Without it, freedom from suffering is impossible. Let’s find ways of understanding how to surrender to what is bigger than us — be that God, the universe, science, or love! In this session, we’ll deep dive into yoga philosophy, create our own altars and bliss rituals, and float into oblivion with yoga nidra.

ABOUT ALEXIS RIDGE-SIMEK
Alexis is the founder and owner of Dragonfly Yoga Studio, which she opened in 2005 with the goal of making yoga accessible to everyone no matter what their body type or health condition. From its humble beginnings, Dragonfly has grown into a thriving yoga community, hosting both 200 and 500 HR teacher trainings, nation-wide retreats, and internationally-known yoga teachers.
Alexis completed a 350-hour Hatha Yoga certification program at Eight Limbs Yoga in Chicago in 2003, studying under Gabriel Halpern, Per Erez, and Miguel Latronica. Alexis continually looks for inspiration and information to share with her students. She also has studied with Rolf Gates (500-hour Advanced Vinyasa) and Brandt Passalacqua of Breathing Deeply (Yoga Therapy and Peaceful Weight Loss Through Yoga).
Alexis has over 1,000 hours combined professional training in yoga and meditation, including a certification in teaching Prenatal Yoga from Sweet Pea’s Studio in Chicago. She has studied Vinyasa Yoga under Shiva Rea and Seane Corn and Thai Yoga Massage with Mukti Michael Buck of the Vedic Conservatory. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Recreation Management from Arizona State University.
ABOUT JOE SIMEK
Joe Simek is an Internationally Certified Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT 875-Hours), a 500-Hour Level Yoga Teacher, and co-owner of Dragonfly Yoga. He has been teaching yoga for more than a decade. As a seasoned meditator and long-time practicing Quaker, Joe is well versed in contemplative traditions, which he has used to improve his physical health, find sobriety, and deepen his personal and spiritual evolution.
Joe has completed over a thousand hours of yoga training. He studied Yoga Therapy (including 150 clinic hours) and Peaceful Weight Loss Through Yoga at Breathing Deeply Yoga Therapy, where he was also a teaching assistant for six years. He also studied Advanced Vinyasa Yoga with Rolf Gates.
Joe has experience bringing yoga to a variety of special populations including emotion support students in Central Bucks School District, young adults at Valley Youth House, patients at Avenues Recovery Center, and clients at the Kin Cancer Center.
In 2016, Joe co-founded The Fiaria Project, a non-profit organization that aids foster children. Joe holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Arizona State University.
